Cryostat.
STEP-BY-STEP DESCRIPTION.
1. Daily maintenance includes checking cryostats
to see that the covers are in place and that they are
operating at proper temperature.
2. If frost accumulates, one cryostat is defrosted
and cleaned, at which time a new blade is inserted. Each cryostat
should have a package of spare blades.
3. Maintenance assistance for the cryostat can be obtained from the
maintenance manuals kept in the file drawer in lab.
4. Fresh staining solutions are supplied in Coplin jars
on the tray across from the cryostats.
This includes daily filtering of the hematoxylin.
5. Periodically, the microscope is checked and spare lamp is supplied.
6. Trays to transport the frozen sections are kept beside the microscope.
It is laboratory policy to process residual tissue from the frozen section
in paraffin and to retain frozen sections themselves, whenever possible.
The dehydrated and permount mounted frozen sections are assigned
a label with the surgical accession number, and are filed with the case.
