PRINCIPLE OF THE TEST.

The goal of cell collection and display methods is: maximal collection area covered with cells; and cells must be displayed under optimal conditions.

SPECIMEN REQUIRED.

Gynecologic cytology and non-gynecologic cytology specimens, with a filled-out Tissue Examination Form (SF-515) for non-gynecologic cytology specimens, and Gynecologic Cytology Form (SF-541) for gynecologic cytology specimens.

REAGENTS, INSTRUMENTATION.

Microscope. Glass slides. Cytyc data cell processor.

STEP-BY-STEP DESCRIPTION.

      1. The goal of all cell collection and display methods is two-fold. First, as much of the collection area as possible should be covered with cells so that the cell sample represents the original specimen accurately. Secondly, the cells must be displayed under optimal conditions. These conditions include such factors as:
a. An even distribution of cells, preferably only one layer.

b. Consistently excellent staining

c. A well mounted permanent preparation containing the smallest amount of mounting medium practical so that a sharp microscopic image is obtained.

      2. Medical slides prepared in the cytopreparatory laboratory are processed for optimal cell distribution. The Cytyc ThinPrep Cell Processor (liquid-based) is used to achieve optimal conditions.
